Background of the Study
Cultural tolerance is a vital component in fostering social cohesion in diverse societies. In Kaduna North LGA, Kaduna State, religious education is increasingly recognized as an influential factor in promoting cultural tolerance among primary school students. The curriculum integrates religious teachings with lessons on respect, understanding, and acceptance of diverse cultural practices, aiming to build a foundation for peaceful coexistence from an early age (Ibrahim, 2023; Musa, 2024). By exposing young learners to ethical principles that emphasize the value of every culture and the importance of empathy, schools strive to create an environment where differences are celebrated rather than feared. The pedagogical approach often involves interactive activities such as cultural exchange programs, storytelling, and discussions that highlight the common values shared across different communities (Sani, 2023). Religious education, in this context, serves not only to impart spiritual knowledge but also to promote social skills that are essential for intercultural dialogue. However, challenges persist in ensuring that these lessons are effectively internalized by students. Factors such as insufficient teacher training, limited resources, and pre-existing cultural biases can hinder the successful integration of tolerance education (Abubakar, 2023). Moreover, the rapid pace of social change and the influx of external cultural influences necessitate a continuous updating of curricular content to remain relevant. This study seeks to evaluate how religious education contributes to fostering cultural tolerance among primary school students in Kaduna North LGA by analyzing curriculum content, teaching methods, and student outcomes. Employing both qualitative and quantitative research methods, the study will assess the perceptions of teachers, students, and parents regarding the effectiveness of these educational interventions (Umar, 2024). The findings are expected to provide critical insights into how religious education can be optimized to better address contemporary challenges associated with cultural diversity and promote a more inclusive society.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the inclusion of cultural tolerance themes in religious education curricula, primary schools in Kaduna North LGA continue to face challenges in achieving the desired levels of intercultural understanding and acceptance among students. Teachers report that while the curriculum advocates for respect and appreciation of diverse cultures, the practical impact on student behavior is limited (Ibrahim, 2023). Contributing factors include a lack of interactive and experiential learning opportunities, insufficient training for teachers on multicultural education, and the persistence of cultural stereotypes within the community (Musa, 2024). These challenges create a gap between the theoretical ideals of cultural tolerance and their practical realization in the classroom. Furthermore, the rapid evolution of cultural norms, influenced by globalization and media, often outpaces the current curricular content, leaving students ill-prepared to navigate an increasingly diverse social landscape. The absence of a systematic evaluation of how religious education influences cultural tolerance in this context further complicates efforts to design effective interventions. This study aims to address these issues by critically assessing the effectiveness of religious education in promoting cultural tolerance among primary school students in Kaduna North LGA. Through surveys, interviews, and classroom observations, the research will identify the key barriers to successful integration of multicultural values into religious education and propose strategies for improvement (Abubakar, 2023). The ultimate goal is to bridge the gap between curriculum theory and classroom practice, ensuring that young learners are equipped with the skills and attitudes necessary for peaceful and respectful coexistence in a diverse society (Umar, 2024).
